Role: Mortgage Underwriter

Location: Newbury*

Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday 9am- 5pm

Salary Range: £24,300 - £27,000 (dependant on experience and qualifications) + benefits


Newbury Building Society, the 2021 winner of “Best Specialist Mortgage Provider” at the British Bank Awards, are recruiting for a Mortgage Underwriter to join their busy underwriting team.

One of the biggest decisions people may take is to buy their own home, committing to a mortgage to finance their purchase.  Customers need reassurance that they are working with a lender who is professional, credible and has their financial wellbeing and best interests at heart. 

Our Mortgage Underwriting team aim to exceed the expectations of our customers by listening and understanding their needs, whilst considering potential risks to both the customer and the business. 

The main responsibilities of the role are to underwrite mortgage applications whilst providing excellent customer service and maintaining the quality of the Society’s mortgage book.


Essential criteria for the role:    

  • Knowledge or experience of the mortgage business and processes  
  • Experience of Microsoft applications including Word, Excel and Outlook
  • GCSE or equivalent with Maths & English grade C or above
  • Willingness to study for CeMAP qualification

Desirable criteria for the role:   

  • Mortgage underwriting experience/working knowledge of the mortgage application process
  • A-level or equivalent standard of education
  • CeMAP qualification


*After completion of probation, their “hybrid” working policy will apply, meaning some flexibility to work from home approx 2 days a week.  Close Date: by 5pm on 29th July 2021.
