Our client, a customer focussed mortgage lender, is seeking an experienced mortgage underwriter to join their team. As their mortgage underwriter, you will support the mortgage application journey to ensure all risks are identified and controlled in line with our clients’ policies and risk pillars.

Whilst our clients head office is based in County Durham, they are happy for this role to be of hybrid nature. They would like this role holder to be office based once a week.

Main duties of the Mortgage Underwriter will include: -

  • Reviewing initial mortgage applications to issue first Decision in Principle that comply with our clients Lending Policy and advising on required documentation to progress the mortgage case.
  • Execution of mandate, clearly stipulating the rationale for the decision in line with the individual delegated authority and ensuring full justification and documentation of decisions made. 
  • Enhanced mandate structure to support and deputise for the Head of Underwriting in their capacity for underwriting mortgages of more complex nature and increased risk.
  • To effectively communicate lending decisions on a timely basis to internal stakeholders.
  • Identify and implement improvements within the department and adhere to service standards and the Quality assurance framework.
  • Provide technical advice to management, colleagues and customers on underwriting of mortgage applications and support improvements to ensure the underwriting function remains relevant and up to date with industry standards.
  • Support coaching, training and development of colleagues including assisting the Underwriting Lead and Head of Underwriting to complete Quality reviews in the team by providing supportive feedback and enhancing personal development.

 

The successful applicant will have: -

  • Previous manual mortgage underwriting experience
  • Ideally both residential and BTL underwriting
  • Either be CeMap qualified or prepared to study to gain the qualification
