Role: Mortgage Underwriter

Location: Ipswich

Salary: £competitive (dependant on exp)


Our client, a successful and well-respected financial services organisation, are recruiting for a Mortgage Underwriter to join their team. The purpose of the role is to manually underwrite and process new mortgage applications to offer stage. The successful candidate will also ensure an exceptional experience to all new and existing customers is provided.

The role is offered with a split between working from home and being in the office, so you need to live within commutable distance of their Head Office in Ipswich.  


Responsibilities include:

  • Processing mortgage applications, further advances and product transfers from receipt of application to offer
  • Conducting credit checks and obtaining valuation reports.
  • Undertaking “processing” data collection - Income verification, ID. reference requests etc.
  • Issuing mortgage/further advance offers and product transfers to applicant(s), and intermediaries
  • Processing offers to the Risk Team for assessment
  • Assessing and making recommendations on cases that are outside of policy
  • Liaising with customers, intermediaries, valuers and solicitors during the processing of their mortgage through to completion, providing a high level of customer service at all times
  • Maintaining relationships with both new and existing brokers
  • Assessing and preparing referrals for the Credit Committee and where necessary preparing the final report/appraisal to credit committee
  • Maintaining the solicitors/valuers panel - dealing with enquiries and placing on the panel
  • Instructing surveyors on inspections where necessary


Skills and experience required:


  • CeMAP/Equivalent qualified or prepared to study and attain CeMAP within 12 months of appointment
  • Previous experience of underwriting residential and buy to let mortgages manually in a ‘prime’ lending environment
  • Experience underwriting complex prime cases
  • Previous experience of providing services to higher net worth customers
  • Previously held your own lending mandate
  • Financial Services background
  • Have a good understanding and be able to keep up to date with all regulatory requirements such as (MCOBS and MMR).
  • Ability to work on own initiative
  • Accuracy/Excellent attention to detail
  • Strong communication and Customer Service skills
