Senior Mortgage Underwriter
Salary dependent on experience + excellent benefits
Northwest England

Flexible hybrid or onsite full time

Our client is an established and successful specialist mortgage lender, based in the Northwest of England. It serves the whole of the UK via broker channels.  This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Mortgage Underwriter to take ownership of complex, higher-mandate lending, influence policy and portfolio performance, and play a key role in coaching and supporting the wider underwriting team. Our client is open to hybrid working or onsite full time.  As a senior member of the team they would like someone who can help upskill other more junior members of staff so would like at least a 1–2-day office presence but can offer support on the costs of commuting or staying overnight if the distance is a challenge.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manually underwrite higher-mandate, complex mortgage applications
  • Assess and approve residential, BTL, self-build and bespoke cases
  • Work closely with brokers and sales to support a strong customer journey while managing risk.
  • Act as a technical escalation point, coaching and supporting underwriters and assisting the Underwriting Lead with team performance and quality.

The successful candidate will possess:

  • Experience as a senior, higher-mandated manual mortgage underwriter within a UK financial services environment.
  • Proven experience underwriting complex and niche lending, including residential, BTL (including portfolios), self-build, holiday lets, high-value cases, complex income, impaired credit and lending into retirement.
  • Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with excellent written and verbal communication.
  • Highly organised, self-motivated and able to work independently while collaborating effectively with others.
  • CEMAP level 3 desirable

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced mortgage underwriting professional to make a difference in a growing, values-led organisation. Our client is open to hybrid working or onsite full time.  As a senior member of the team, they would like someone who can commit to at least 1-2 days office presence but can offer support on the costs of commuting or staying overnight if the distance is a challenge. As well as a competitive salary, benefits include pension and life insurance. We would love to hear from you if this role aligns with your skillset and appeals to you.
