The purpose of the Underwriting Specialist role is to assess financial risk associated with extending customer credit and financing.

Responsibilities of the Underwriting Specialist

  • Assess risk by manually underwriting dealer proposals in accordance with credit/underwriting policy rules and service level adherence targets.
  • Undertake the appropriate analysis of retail customer’s financial statements coupled with an analysis of the customer’s repayment capacity
  • Utilise the Genus system to achieve auto acceptance decision targets and to help self-manage work queues.
  • Answer inbound dealer and Account Manager enquiry calls in accordance with average speed of answer targets
  • Answer inbound Payout and Activation enquiry calls and ensure Team Leader is aware of potential issues associated with proposal backlog
  • Undertake testing and tuning of the retail and commercial scorecards
  • Meet individual telephone statistic goals
  • Participate in tuning of any predictive risk modelling
  • Communicate with Brokers/Dealers by phone, email and webchat

Requirements for the Underwriting Specialist role

  • Capable of undertaking quantitative and qualitative analysis; the ability to review metrics/financial ratios and supporting information and be able to understand what they mean for each proposal
  • Understand financial statements (balance sheets, income statements, cash flow)
  • Able to interpret reports, extracting non apparent information
  • Thoroughly understand underwriting and credit practices and procedures
  • Ability to operate, upon training, a credit decision and workflow management system
  • Ability to talk and type at the same time
  • 3 years’ experience in an underwriting or credit analyst position in financial services
  • Experience in the automotive or consumer finance industry is advantageous.
  • Practical experience with scorecard design and testing
  • Comfortable with a Shift pattern: M- Fri - 9-5.30 (3 days in office then one in 3 weeks 10.30-7pm (wfh) Once a month a weekend (wfh) with 2 days off in lieu.
