Introduction to the role:
Our client is the Penrith Building Society, a highly customer focussed, specialist financial services provider who are recruiting for a new position to lead their mortgage teams. This is a great opportunity for an experienced leader with an entrepreneurial spirit and strong mortgage background.
The focus of the role is to lead the Mortgage Processing/Lending teams, Proposition and Business Development ensuring they are all working in symbiosis and with a particular focus on providing an exceptional broker journey.
The successful candidate will have a wealth of Mortgage Underwriting knowledge, alongside the capability to liaise and develop/maintain relationships with brokers. You will be able to balance the demands of achieving their target commercial outcomes whilst delivering great outcomes for their brokers and borrowers in the areas under their control.
The position offers long-term career development, with the potential for the right candidate to progress towards becoming a member of the Executive Team on a three-year horizon, subject to demonstrating the required skills and capabilities in the role.
Core Responsibilities of the Head of Mortgages:

- Mortgage Processing: Leading the team with responsibility for defining and delivering the service standards and experience to brokers and borrowers. You will have ownership of the mortgage application journey, processes and controls, and be a lending mandate holder.
- Business Development: Lead the development of the mortgage distribution strategy and ensure key broker relationships are nurtured and developed, with line management responsibility for the Mortgage Development Manager and the Business Development Officer.
- Mortgage Proposition: Whilst managing the Product Manager, lead on proposition and product offering, contributing towards the development of the overarching business strategy through the development and articulation of a compelling mortgage strategy that will achieve the target commercial outcomes
This is a hybrid working role, with the role holder expected to be based at their head office in Penrith, at least one day a week. For training purposes, they may initially require more office presence. Due to the level and nature of the role, there will be times throughout the month that short notice office presence is required, therefore, you must live within reasonable commuting distance to Penrith.
Experience & skills required for the Head of Mortgages:
- Proven Leadership experience gained within a mortgage lending environment
- Strong knowledge and experience within mortgage underwriting
- Capability to nurture and develop broker relationships
- A passion for delivering an excellent customer journey to members, colleagues and brokers alike
- An eye for detail with experience in building processes / systems which facilitate a seamless and timely customer journey
