Our client is a relatively small but successful financial services provider who are looking to strengthen their risk team by recruiting an Operational Risk Officer on a fixed term contract basis (14 months) to support during a large change project. You will be part of the 2nd line of defence, supporting the embedding of the operational and conduct risk management and operational resilience frameworks to ensure they are robust and remain up to date.

You will need to work with the business to identify, quantify and assess the risks, providing advice and guidance as to their handling, together with the appropriate degree of challenge as necessary.  Whilst our client is based in Dorset, there is a lot of flexibility to work from home so could live within circa. 90mins travel.

Acting under the direction of the Head of Risk, key responsibilities of the Operational Risk Officer include:

  • To support the embedding of a robust risk management framework, including risk management and policy reviews, to be monitored on a regular basis.
  • To provide independent oversight and challenge from a risk management point of view.
  • To provide oversight, challenge and guidance in relation to the risk management processes, practices and knowledge of the 1st Line of Defence (operational areas).
  • To review methodology used for risk assessment and control and make suggestions for change as required.
  • To maintain and enhance loss / risk event recording and reporting and, where possible, make recommendations to avoid further losses.
  • To ensure that the business understands its appetite for risk enabling decisions to be made accordingly. To develop Key Risk Indicators linked to this in order to provide an ‘early warning’ of potential risks and an ability to measure the Society’s risk profile.
  • To support the creation of accurate and meaningful report to committees (and managers) as required. Ensuring the analysis can be used to assist in the making of business decisions and the challenging of the Society’s systems and controls in respect of risk management.
  • To provide input to the Society’s projects from a risk management perspective as required.
  • To provide oversight and challenge in relation to business continuity and operational resilience planning.
  • To provide oversight and challenge in relation to processes and arrangements for outsourcing and third-party risk management.

Knowledge / Skills Required of the Operational Risk Officer:

  • Experience and track record in 2nd line of defence operational and conduct risk management, preferably in financial services.
  • Knowledge and experience of embedding risk management frameworks.
  • Knowledge and understanding of operational and conduct risk appetites and developing appropriate metrics for their measurement.

Salary is up to £45k and with great benefits to match incl. 28 days holiday (plus B/H), this is a great opportunity for an Operational Risk professional to really influence a business, to be a ‘bigger fish in a smaller pond’ and work for a truly customer focussed business.
